Genes Blog: International Credit Union Day

As you know, Rogue has a strong focus on the importance of living local, but this month we’re celebrating International Credit Union Day.  That’s the beauty of the credit union movement – what was started by a group of weavers working towards economic independence in 19th century England has made its way across the world and is influencing our local economy, right here in Southern Oregon.

This year, credit unions are celebrating the “Local Service. Global Reach.” of credit unions around the world. We are excited to celebrate the special role that credit unions play in creating financial independence and inclusion. From our early beginnings as people’s banks and credit societies in Europe, to a few teachers joining together in the Jefferson Elementary cafeteria in 1956, credit unions have always been about people joining together to help their friends, neighbors and family members build a better financial future.

I have been fortunate enough to see the power of the International Credit Union movement firsthand. I had the opportunity to personally meet with credit union leaders from Guatemala and discuss our student branch program. I also watched Oregon credit unions join together to mentor credit union leaders in Uzbekistan. While credit unions are a worldwide movement, connected by the simple idea that by joining together, people could achieve a better financial future, each credit union is also uniquely designed to serve the needs of its specific communities.

Here at Rogue Credit Union, we know Southern Oregon. We’re your neighbors and your friends. We know the rich history of this region and understand the local economy. We’ve seen the struggles of the timber industry and have stood alongside our members though the challenges of the Great Recession. We’ve also been blessed by your trust and loyalty. Your support has given your credit union the ability to ensure locally owned and focused financial services not only for today, but for the long haul.

This year, when we’re celebrating the “Local Service. Global Reach.” of International Credit Union Day, we’re not only celebrating credit unions around the world, we’re celebrating YOU and the choice you’ve made to be a member. Please visit one of our branches or roguecu.org to learn more about how you can join with us to support local charities on Thursday October 17th and continue the credit union tradition of people helping people!

Thank you for choosing to support this global movement by living local… it’s a ROGUE thing!
